In kindergarten through fifth grade, we use Math in Focus as our core resource. This program is based on the Singapore Math philosophy. It provides a balanced approach to math education with an emphasis on both conceptual understanding and fluency with skills. The ultimate goal is for students to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts. They will focus on problem solving, while developing their thinking from concrete to pictorial to abstract.
Major topics in 5th grade math include Whole Number and Decimal Place Value, Whole Number Operations, Fractions, Decimal Operations, Geometry, and Measurement.
The students in grades 6, 7, and 8 use a Mathematics series called Connected Mathematics Program, 3rd Edition (CMP3). This is a student centered, inquiry based series that is aligned to the Common Core Math Standards. In CMP3, the important mathematical ideas that the students will learn are embedded within the context of interesting problems.
Major topics in 6th and 7th grade math include: Ratios and Proportions, Rational Numbers, Expressions and Equations, and Geometry. The major topics in 8th grade math include Real Numbers and Exponents, Congruence/Similarity, Expressions and Equations, the Pythagorean Theorem, and Functions. For students in Algebra, the major concepts include Linear and Exponential Functions, Expressions and Equations, and Quadratic Functions and Modeling.
